A packed hall at JW3 enjoyed a fascinating panel discussion on the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court and the state of global legal systems. Expertly moderated by Lord Pannick KC, the panel featured the following distinguished speakers: Professor Yuval Shany from the Hebrew University, Professor Philippe Sands KC and Professor Anat Scolnicov from the University of Winchester, who engaged in a thought-provoking conversation about international law, the role of international courts and human rights.
Drawing from their extensive experience with international litigation, negotiation and arbitration and the UN framework, the panelists reflected on the successes and shortcomings of international law. They explored the structural challenges contributing to the current global legal crises and offered insights into potential pathways for institutional reform.
Perceptive questions from the audience added depth to the discussion and sparked a lively debate on whether the International Court of Justice and international law, in general, are primarily political or professional bodies, and how countries should approach rulings with which they disagree. This is especially relevant in light of the recent arrest warrants that were issued to Israeli leaders by the International Criminal Court only few days after the event.
