In early November, the British Friends hosted a special, first-of-its-kind gathering in central London: around 25 Hebrew University postgraduate, exchange and other undergraduate students, studying in various programmes across the UK in leading universities – Birmingham, Leeds, York, Oxford, Cambridge, LSE and KCL – came together for a fantastic lunch generously hosted by BFHU trustee, Tony Page at his beautiful kosher restaurant overlooking Hyde Park. The event was attended by BFHU Chair Alan Jacobs, trustee Ben Stowe and members of the professional team, Chief Executive Nigel Salomon, Marketing Lead Moriah Aharon and Head of the HU UK Israeli alumni community, Merav Shany.
In times like these, a sense of community is invaluable. We reminded the students that BFHU is here to support (such as the modest grant each has received), offering a space to connect, share, and simply be together. This gathering was a wonderful opportunity to foster closeness and a sense of belonging — both as Israelis abroad and as part of the Hebrew University family.
“I was struck by how passionate the students were about studying in the UK and about their Alma mater the Hebrew University, often citing the academic rigour and high standards of the latter when compared to other global institutions” said trustee Ben Stowe. “They also seemed so confident to speak to Israel both in terms of internal politics and foreign affairs. If only that level of confidence existed for our own Jewish British students who often feel shut down and silenced when it comes to speaking about Israel. The students were, without exception, wonderful ambassadors for the Hebrew University and for what Israel has to offer on the global stage. Good luck to them”.
“I want to thank everyone who took part in making the event a success. It was truly wonderful to meet and gather together, especially in challenging times like these. It’s important for us to feel united and know that there’s someone there for us,” shared one of the students.
We wish them all the best in their studies!
