In this Hebrew University webinar, Prof. Lioz Etgar describes the most recent advancements in solar energy, including the three generations of solar cells and where the technology is headed. Prof. Etgar is an Associate Professor in the Institute of Chemistry at the Hebrew University. His research focuses on the development of innovative solar cells, and he was the first to use perovskite to create a much simpler cell structure. Prof. Egar was awarded the prestigious Kaye Innovation Awards in 2021, and the Krill Prize in 2016. He has published over 100 articles, holds eight patents, and is the founder of Solra, a new start-up under the auspices Yissum.
In this webinar Prof. Monsonego Ornan describes her recent study which provides the first comprehensive analysis of how ultra-processed food foods impact skeletal development. The findings are critical because it’s known that children and adolescents consume these foods on a very regular basis to the extent that 50 percent of children in the US are ingesting them each and every day.

This webinar features Prof. Mona Khoury-Kassabri, Vice President of Strategy and Diversity at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, with an introduction by Amb. Yossi Gal, Vice President for Advancement and External Relations Prof. Khoury-Kassbari’s research focused on child and youth welfare, particularly youth-at-risk becoming perpetrators and victims of violent and delinquent acts. Yair Zakovitch is the Emeritus Father Takeji Otsuki Professor of Bible at the Hebrew University. In 2021, he will receive the prestigious Israel Prize in Biblical Studies. The Bible usually tells us why bad things happen, but no explanation is given for why the Israelites were enslaved in Egypt for 400 years. The absence of an explanation does not mean that the biblical writers did not supply answers: in this lecture, we will uncover the different explanations that the Bible gives for this national catastrophe.

Why is Israel facing an unprecedented phenomenon of having four elections in two years? This webinar will propose explanations and will present a comparison of the elections of 2019-2020. Prof. Gideon Rahat will also explain why the 2021 elections are both similar and different from the three previous elections. Prof. Gideon Rahat is a professor in the Department of Political Science at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and a senior fellow at the Israel Democracy Institute. His research fields are comparative politics and Israeli politics. His interests include political parties, electoral reform, the personalization of politics and candidate selection methods. He has published numerous academic articles and several books.

Simon Benita est professeur à l'Université Hébraïque de Jérusalem, où il a obtenu son doctorat en pharmacie en 1980. Ses recherches se concentrent sur les systèmes d'administration de médicaments polymériques nano et micro particulaires visant à améliorer les performances thérapeutiques des principes actifs. Il a publié 160 articles de recherche et 20 chapitres de livres, a édité ou co-édité 5 livres et a obtenu 38 brevets et demandes de brevet. Il est le fondateur de Novagali Pharma, une société qui a reçu le prix «91 d’or» en 2009 de la Confédération française des entreprises, ainsi que le «Health Award» de Siemens. Parmi les autres sociétés fondées par le professeur Benita, citons MacroBea (2011) pour l'administration topique de nanoparticules pour des applications cosmétiques; et BioNanoSim (BNS) (2015) qui se concentre sur les nano-porteurs innovants comme solution de choix pour une meilleure administration de médicaments afin d'améliorer les performances thérapeutiques. Le professeur Benita a reçu des prix en Israël et à l'étranger, notamment Chevalier dans l’Ordre National du Mérite du gouvernement français en mai 2012. Il a été directeur de l'Institut de recherche sur les médicaments et chef de l'École de pharmacie de la Faculté de médecine de l'Université hébraïque de Jérusalem de 2010 à 2014.

Prof. Hagai Levine is an Associate Professor of Epidemiology at the Braun School of Public Health and Community Medicine of the Hebrew University-Hadassah in Jerusalem and the Chairman of the Israeli Association of Public Health Physicians. His research focuses on translating scientific knowledge into health policy, in several areas such as environmental health, tobacco control and control of communicable diseases. Prof. Levine combines in his academic career the vast experience as leading public health professional at the Israeli Defense Forces and Ministry of Health, and continue to advocate for public health as a member of national and international committees, including the Israeli National Expert Panel for COVID-19 response. He is specifically interested in promoting scientific-based preparedness and response to global and local threats to public health, such as climate change, pandemics and chemical toxification.

A conversation between Prof. Eva Illouz and Prof. Moshe Sluchovsky Prof. Eva Illouz is a renowned sociologist. Her research focuses on the sociology of capitalism, the sociology of emotions, the sociology of gender and the sociology of culture. Her work explores several significant and thought-provoking themes, such as the influence of capitalism on emotions, the commodification of romance and the meaning of freedom, choice, and individualism in the modern world. Prof. Moshe Sluhovsky is the Paulette and Claude Kelman Professor of the History of French Jewry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and past head of the Lafer Center for the Study of Women and Gender and of the Institute of History. He is currently studying the Jewish presence in Gay Berlin during the Weimar period and on the migration of gay and lesbian German Jews to Palestine in the 1930s.

Prof. Benny Hochner is a Professor (Emeritus) of Neurobiology at the Department of Neurobiology, Silberman Institute of Life Sciences. He is the Principal Investigator of the Octopus Research Group. Since 1994, he has been involved in octopus arms motor control research as inspiration for robotics. He also studies the neurobiology of learning and memory of octopuses. Dr. Letizia Zullo is a researcher at the Center for Micro-BioRobotics & Department of Neuroscience and Brain Technologies at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, working in the field of motor control of hyper-redundant limbs. The aim of her research is to investigate the properties of the Octopus arm sensory-motor systems, the muscle mechanics, structure and molecular determinant of muscle formation with a special focus on their application in the bio-robotic field.
Paula Crown is a multimedia artist with a practice encompassing drawing, painting, video, and sculpture. Crown rigorously incorporates cutting-edge technology, social activism, collaboration, and a commitment to sustainability in her studio practice. Crown’s works are in numerous public and top-100 private collections. In 2009, President Barack Obama appointed Crown to the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities. She is a member of the board of trustees of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, where she chairs the Education Committee. She also serves on the Aspen Institute Committee of the Arts. Crown’s work INSIDE MY HEAD: A Contemporary Self Portrait is currently on view as a virtual exhibit at Hebrew University Art Gallery. Leon Deouell is the Jack H. Skirball Professor in Brain Research, Human Cognitive Neuroscience Lab at the Edmond and Lily Safra Center for Brain Sciences at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The focus of Prof. Deouell's Lab is on the interface between automatic, non-conscious stages of information processing in the brain and conscious perception and action. He uses various neuroimaging methods, including EEG and fMRI to study the activity of the human brain in these processes, in healthy individuals and after brain damage.

Prof. Michal Frenkel is Chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and the Academic Head of The Shaine Center for Research in Social Sciences at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Prof. Frenkel’s current work examines the intersectionality of gender and religiosity in the contexts of the segregated ultra-Orthodox colleges and in the high-tech industry in Israel. She has published extensively on Israeli society, gender, race, nationality, and religiosity within and around organizations, on center-periphery relations in organization studies, international management, work-family arrangements.
Learn about mosquitoes with Dr. Jonathan D. Bohbot. Dr. Bohbot is an Assistant Professor of Entomology at The Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Dr. Bohbot studies the neurobiology of insect olfaction using a variety of disciplines including biochemistry, molecular biology, sensory physiology, pharmacology, bioinformatics and behavior.

Dr. Miriam Goldstein is the Chair of the Department of Arabic Language and Literature at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Her research focuses on medieval Judeo-Arabic literature and interreligious relations among Jews, Christians and Muslims in the medieval Arabic-speaking world. She is author of Karaite Exegesis in Medieval Jerusalem (Tübingen, 2011) and editor of Beyond religious borders: Interaction and intellectual exchange in the medieval Islamic world (Philadelphia, 2011), as well as numerous articles on Arabic and Judeo-Arabic literature.

Dr. Aliza Stark is the Co-Director of the International MSc Program in Nutritional Sciences in English, Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Dr. Stark’s research focuses on health promotion and nutrition education with projects involving sustainable nutritional practices in the developing world. Dr. Stark has 70 publications in peer-reviewed journals and books and serves as the academic liaison for the forum for the Advancement of Women for the City of Rehovot.
